Lace: From William Borlase to Pamela Nottingham
Marlow Museum's latest exhibition opens on Saturday April 5th and will be on display for the next five months. The exhibition celebrates over four hundred years of lacemaking in Marlow.
Lace Through the Centuries
In 1624, Marlow made history when Sir William Borlase established one of the nation’s first lace schools, offering poor girls the chance to learn the art of bobbin lace-making. This delicate craft not only showcased remarkable skill but also provided essential income to struggling rural families—although the tireless women and children behind the work earned little for their efforts.
By the late 19th century, the rise of machine-made lace led to a decline in this traditional industry. Yet, Marlow’s lace heritage experienced a remarkable revival in the 20th century, thanks to local legend Pamela Nottingham, MBE (1934–2023). Her groundbreaking book The Technique of Bobbin Lace reignited global interest in this timeless craft. Pamela’s incredible legacy, including her generous bequest to Marlow Museum, ensures that the beauty and tradition of lace-making continue to inspire future generations.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to explore the importance of lacemaking in Marlow and the social history of this vital industry particularly for women and girls.
Throughout the summer, why not try your hand at the range of special activities for all the family taking place alongside the exhibition. These include lacemaking demonstrations, try-your-hand at lacemaking, and much more.
