Visiting Marlow Museum – Access Information

Local transport links

The 850 bus runs between High Wycombe and Reading via Marlow (West Street), Henley and Twyford, every 20 minutes Monday - Friday, every 30 minutes on Saturday and hourly on Sunday. From the West Street bus stop, it is a 6-minute walk (200 yards) to the museum via Portlands Alley. The train from Maidenhead to Marlow via Bourne End, runs approximately every half hour. From Marlow station it is a 13-minute walk (500 yards) to the museum via Station Road and Pound Lane. Change at Maidenhead, on the main London/Reading to the West line, for Marlow.

Parking

Pound Lane car park is outdoors and at ground level. The parking is pay and display: you can pay by credit or with debit card, including contactless, or by RingGo, but not by cash. None of the payment machines feature level access, where a wheelchair user could approach for payment. Controls for the machines are high from ground floor level and may not be suitable for both seated and standing users. It has 209 standard parking spaces; 6 disabled parking spaces for Blue Badge holders; 4 parking spaces for electric vehicles (parking charges still apply); 2 electric vehicle charging points (1 rapid charging, 1 fast charging); free motorcycle parking and no height restriction. Four accessible parking bays are provided within close proximity to the museum. The accessible bays are signposted to the front, but pictorial information is not provided and the bays are heavily faded. They are within suitable distance of the museum. The route from the bays towards the museum features a gradient that some wheelchair users may find difficult to navigate, particularly to the right, where the slope is steeper, and a structural column adds greater obstacles. No safety marked routes are identified within the car park. The car park is lit at night.

Arrival

Marlow Museum is a small building, consisting of one room and is located by the leisure centre on the edge of Pound Lane, Marlow car park. One dropped kerb is available on approach to the museum from the main car park. This is not clearly highlighted. There are tactile paving slabs that are slightly damaged on the crossing point towards the museum, which could be a trip hazard. Approach routes towards the museum are wide enough for wheelchair users. The bollards positioned on approach to the museum are not well contrasted and could be collision hazards. There are structural columns outside the museum, which do not feature contrasted markings and could be collision hazards. The museum has a name sign on the back and front of the building and, when open, a ‘flag’ banner, an A-frame and an old delivery bicycle are put outside the museum.

Entrance to Marlow Museum

The entrance features a slight step; a ramped surface both internally and externally are provided to assist over the threshold. The internal ramp features a slightly raised lip. Both ramps are the width of the door, which is 805mm.

Inside the museum

The museum is free of charge to visit. There is a permanent exhibition of the story of Marlow and a temporary exhibition which changes once or twice a year and is advertised on our website. There is a lowered counter. There is a retail display which is lowered. The space is open and navigable and level access, in one room. There is no induction loop. Some seating is provided on folding chairs.

Museum interpretation

The exhibition labels are mostly in a clear, legible font. They range in height from near ground level to around 1.5m. The lower labels may not be a suitable height for all visitors to read. Some labels are positioned at angles and at backs of cases and may not be clearly visible for all users. Lighting throughout the museum is good but is lowered in some cases, to protect the objects on display.

Café and toilets

The nearest café and WC facilities are in the adjacent Leisure Centre. There are toilets on the ground floor and more next to the café on the first floor. There is a lift to the first floor, though at some distance from the leisure centre entrance. In the toilets the flooring is tiled. The fittings are white against a beige tile, providing minimal contrast. The floor and ceiling tiles are the same, which could create confusion as to the size of the room for people who are partially sighted. The compartment doors for the cubicles have minimal contrast against their surrounding frames. The push style taps may not be suitable for people with limited dexterity in their wrists. Accessible WC facilities are provided within the leisure centre. The downstairs compartment for the accessible WC facility in the leisure centre is locked with a code, obtainable from the reception desk, and is positioned along a corridor near to the changing rooms.
